In the 3-6 building, we work in an open plan setting. Children work independently and collaboratively to reach their full potential. Each year level has access to an intereactive television and a 1:1 laptop program provided by the school. We have a library, fully stocked with books for all reading abilities and interests.
School Camp
Each year, we take students to Camp Doxa. The grade 3/4 students are offered an overnight camp and the grade 5/6 students are offered a three day trip. All meals and activities are provided by the Doxa staff.
Incursions and Excursions
At Broadmeadows Primary School, we offer students a range of academic and practical rich learning experiences to ensure that our students are fully engaged in their learning. Numeracy
Numeracy at Broadmeadows Primary School focuses on developing the proficiency strands of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning in our students. These proficiency strands are an integral part of numeracy teaching and learning across the three content strands, Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. We use an instructional model to ensure that all students are working within their Zone of Proximal Development. Students in the 3-6 area have participated in the Victorian High Ability Program designed to extend their knowledge and understanding of mathematics.
Reading
Reading at Broadmeadows Primary School focuses on consolodating crucial reading skills in our students. The English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. These strands develop understanding and knowledge in Reading and Viewing, and Speaking and Listening. We use an instructional model known as 'The Independent Reading Model' to support students in becoming independent readers. In the 3-6 area, we focus on developing student knowledge of the relevant reading comprehension strategies to ensure success in their schooling.
Writing
Writing at Broadmeadows Primary School focuses on developing critical writing skills in our students. The English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. These strands develop understanding and knowledge in Writing. We participated in a pilot program to develop the Teaching and Learning Cycle. This program has been developed across our region and is now integrated in the teaching of writing at our school. Students build a range of knowledge about particular topics, learn the structure of the text type and draft their text according to their learning. This enables our students to develop their writing and learn different text structures and features along the way.
History
History at Broadmeadows Primary School focuses on learning about significant events in Australia's History while ensuring to incorporate Indigenous and Eurpoean perspectives. From the Indigenous perspective, students learn about The Stolen Generations, Dream Time, the effects of European Colonisation. From the European perspecitve, students learn about The First Fleet, Gold Rush and Federation.
Science
Science at Broadmeadows Primary School focuses on learning about important scientific concepts. In grade 3 and 4, students learn about different life cycles and investigate changes in the states of matter. In grade 5 and 6, students learn about adaptations and survival of different species and further develop their understanding in changes in the states of matter. We also paticipate in science based learning with our neighbouring secondary school.
Economics and Business
Economics and Business at Broadmeadows Primary School focuses on consumers and their choices. As part of this unit, our students work closely with staff and the community to plan, market, develop and sell different products to learn about consumerism.
ICT
ICT at Broadmeadows Primary School focuses on developing important life skills necessary for success. All of our students in grades 3-6 have their own laptop that they use at school. They have free access to the Google Workspace and Office 365. Students also work with robotics and multimedia technology. They learn to use coding programs and produce different algoritms for different purposes.
SEL
SEL at Broadmeadows Primary School is designed to give students the social skills necessary for success in life. We use the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials to develop students’ social, emotional and positive relationship skills.
